“The way a culture treats women in birth, is a good indicator of how well women and their contributions to society are valued and honored” - Ina May Gaskin
MOTHER LOVER is a non-profit organization raising awareness about the maternal health crisis in the United States.
A FEW FACTS:
-The United States is the only developed nation where women are 50% more likely to die in childbirth than their own mothers were, yet over 60% of those deaths are preventable.
-In America, due to systemic racism and lack of resources, black mothers are 4 times more likely to die than their white peers.
-Giving birth in the United States costs $17,853 on average, that's four times as much as in the United Kingdom, yet the percentage of women dying in the US during childbirth is 142% greater than that of the United Kingdom.
-Cancer death rate has dropped 27% in the past 25 years; from 1990 to 2016, thanks to breakthrough medical advances, breast cancer death rates declined 40%, prostate cancer death rates declined 51% and lung cancer death rates declined 48%. Meanwhile the maternal mortality rate has increased by 56%.
It is time to lift up the voices that aren’t being heard because of poverty, racism or fear. Because MOTHERS ARE THE GATEKEEPERS OF THE FUTURE AND WE NEED BIG CHANGES TO HAPPEN RIGHT NOW.
